Abstract
Crotonic acid is recovered from an aqueous solution containing not less than 10 per cent by weight of sodium or potassium crotonate by adding sulphuric acid in an amount in excess of that stoichiometrically necessary to decompose the sodium or potassium crotonate but not more than that necessary to produce a solution containing 10 per cent by weight of free sulphuric acid and removing the precipitated crotonic acid from the solution. Preferably the amount of sulphuric acid added is such that after removing the crotonic acid the resulting solution has a free sulphuric acid concentration of 50 to 100 gms. per litre. The process may be carried out at about 15 to 25 DEG C. The crotonic acid may be dehydrated to crotonic aldehyde, for example, by treatment with acetic anhydride. The crotonic acid may be purified by washing with water or a saturated aqueous solution of crontonic acid.
