Abstract

Crude acetone is purified by subjecting it, after the removal of alkaline or acid impurities, to treatment with an aqueous solution of sodium e.g. copper sulphate, and fractionating the product, acetone being withdrawn from the head of the column. The acetone may be purified (1) in the vapour phase by being scrubbed in packed towers with acid solution, e.g. sulphuric acid, alkaline solution, e.g. limewater, and the permanganate-copper salt solution, or (2) in the liquid phase, using a bed of cation exchange resin and a bed of anion exchange resin, and finally mixing with the permanganate-copper salt solution.
