Abstract

Hydrocarbons containing mineral acid and/or mineral acid esters are distilled in the presence of aqueous caustic alkali solution flowing downwardly through the column and sufficient alkali is maintained near the point of entry of hydrocarbons to neutralize the acid. The process is particularly useful in the distillation of the raffinate obtained after removing isobutylene from C4 hydrocarbon streams by treatment with sulphuric acid. The amount of caustic solution added is equivalent to 0,05-0,5 lb. of caustic soda/lb. of feed, the solution containing 1-10% by weight of caustic soda and the amount of solution maintained at the point of hydrocarbon entry is 0,06-0,30 gall./G.P.H. of feed.
