Abstract

Tertiary butyl acetate is produced by contacting isobutene with acetic acid containing 0.5%-30% by weight of sulphuric acid, distilling the product in a column into which water is introduced, and removing overhead from the column a mixture of tertiary butyl acetate, tertiary butyl alcohol and water. The isobutene may be substantially pure or mixed with other hydrocarbons containing 4 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. butene-1, butene-2, butadiene, n-butane or isobutane. Aqueous acetic acid and sulphuric acid may be removed from the base of the distillation column, dried and returned to the reactor for reaction with more isobutene. The proportion of water introduced into the column is preferably from 5% to 50% by volume of acetic acid introduced.
