Abstract
An ethylene fraction and a propylene fraction are separated from a gas mixture by contacting the mixture with benzene, toluene, or ethyl benzene, ethylene being separated as the gaseous phase and propylene being preferentially dissolved and recovered by heating the solution. Ethylene dissolved by the solvent may be removed by heating the liquid in the lower part of the absorption tower (in which case the original gas mixture is introduced higher up the tower), or by fractionation in a separate column. The solvent stripped from propylene may be cooled and recirculated to the absorption tower. When benzene or ethyl benzene is used as the solvent, the ethylene-containing gas from the absorption tower may be mixed with benzene and contacted with a Friedel-Craft catalyst to form ethyl benzene.ALSO:In the preparation of ethyl benzene from benzene and ethylene by the Friedel-Craft reaction, the ethylene is obtained by treating a gas mixture containing ethylene and propylene with benzene or ethyl benzene to remove the propylene (see Group III).
