Abstract

Normally gaseous mixtures in liquid form are contacted with a selective solvent and subsequently the stream from which selected components have been removed and the solvent stream rich in said components are recovered. The process is particularly applicable to the separation of acetylenic hydrocarbons from gaseous mixtures but amongst the components of gaseous mixtures which are treated are acetylene, methyl acetylene, ethyl acetylene, vinyl acetylene, diacetylene, methane, ethane, propane, ethylene, propylene, butylene, butadiene, and various light hydrocarbon mixtures containing olefines and paraffins. Selective solvents exemplified are dimethyl formamide, diethyl acetamide, diethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetone and acetic anhydride.ALSO:Normally gaseous mixtures in liquid form are contacted with a selective solvent and subsequently the stream from which selected components have been removed and the solvent stream rich in said components are recovered. The process is particularly applicable to the separation of acetylenic hydrocarbons from gaseous mixtures while amongst the components of gaseous mixtures which are treated are acetylene, methyl acetylene, ethyl acetylene, vinyl acetylene, diacetylene, methane, ethane, propane, ethylene, propylene, butylene, butadiene, and various light hydrocarbon mixtures containing olefines and paraffins. Selective solvents which may be used in processes according to the invention comprise dimethyl formamide, diethyl acetamide, diethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetone and acetic anhydride.
