Abstract
548,733. Distilling hydrocarbons. FIFE, J. G. (Shell Development Co.). April 21, 1941, No. 5138. [Class 32] [Also in Group IV] Hydrocarbons of different degrees of saturation contained in hydrocarbon vapour mixtures of relatively narrow boiling range are separated by bringing the vapour into contact with a liquid solvent comprising acetonitrile, propionitrile, nitromethane, nitroethane, or nitropropane to dissolve selectively. the hydrocarbons of lesser degree of saturation which are then recovered from the solution. The vapour may be scrubbed by the solvent in a spray, packed, or bubble-plate tower or the solvent may be caused to flow down a distillation column as the distillation proceeds. The process may be applied to the separation of acetylene from ethane or ethylene, ethylene from ethane, propylene from propane, butadiene from butylenes, butane &c., butylenes from butene, pentadienes such as isoprene from fractions containing five carbon atoms, cyclopentadiene from cyclopentane or pentanes &c.
