548,734. Separating light hydrocarbons. FIFE, J. G. (Shell Development Co.). April 21, 1941, No. 5140. [Class 32] [Also in Group IV] Hydrocarbons of different degrees of saturation contained in hydrocarbon vapour mixtures of relatively narrow boiling range are separated by bringing the vapour into contact with a liquid solvent mixture containing 5-35 per cent. by weight of water and 95-65 per cent. by weight of morpholine, dioxane, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetonitrile, or lactonitrile to dissolve selectively the hydrocarbons of lesser degree of saturation which are then recovered from the solution. The vapour may be scrubbed by the solvent in a spray, packed, or bubble plate tower or the solvent may be caused to flow down a distillation column as the distillation proceeds. The process may be applied to the separation of acetylene from ethane or ethylene, ethylene from ethane, propylene from propane, butadiene from butylenes, butane &c., butylenes from butane, pentadienes such as isoprene from fractions containing five carbon atoms, cyclopentadiene from cyclopentane or pentenes &c.
