Abstract

In a process for separating straight chain hydrocarbons from mixtures by contacting the mixtures with molecular sieves in a fixed bed on which the straight chain hydrocarbons are selectively adstrbed, the molecular sieve is desorbed and regenerated by contacting with an olefine-containing gas and the straight chain hydrocarbons thereby recovered. When applied to the adsorption of paraffins boiling in the gasoline range, ethylene, n-butylene or propylene, particularly the latter, is preferred as the desorption agent and adsorption and desorption are both carried out in the vapour phase at the same temperature, preferably 100-450 DEG F. In one embodiment a fraction of a hydroformate boiling in the range C6-200 DEG F. is first dried and desulphurised by passing as a vapour preheated to 200-300 DEG F. over a molecular sieve material having a pore size of 4 or less and then over a molecular sieve material having a pore size of about 5 at 175-350 DEG F., a pressure of atmospheric to 400 p.s.i.g. and a space velocity of 0,1-5 vols. of liquid/vol. of adsorbent/hour. When straight chain hydrocarbons appear in the effluent the feed is stopped and a propylene-containing gas, e.g. a cracked refinery gas, preheated to 200-250 DEG F. and if desired dried and purified with a molecular sieve, is passed through the adsorbent at the same temperature as the first stage. The paraffins are desorbed and removed and the olefine adsorbed. On recontinuing the feed of hydroformate fraction the propylene is itself desorbed and paraffins again adsorbed. In preparing a feed for an alkylation process, a mixture of normal and iso-butanes is passed over the adsorbent, the normal butane being adsorbed. This is then displaced by passing over a cracked refinery gas and the n-butane effluent is passed through an isomerisation zone to give a mixture of n- and iso-butanes which mixture is again passed through the adsorbent, propylene being displaced and n-butane adsorbed. The mixture of iso-butane and olefine can then be passed to an alkylation process. Natural and synthetic zeolites are referred to as molecular sieve materials.
