Abstract

A process for the recovery of substantially anhydrous lower aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids from the product of reaction of non-aromatic hydrocarbons of 4 to 8 carbon atoms with oxygen, comprises removing low and high boiling products from the crude oxidation product to leave an aqueous fraction containing C1- 3 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids together with corrosive products, subjecting this aqueous fraction to extraction with di-iso propyl ether to give an extract substantially free from corrosive products, and thereafter distilling the extract to remove the water and isopropyl ether as an overhead fraction and recovering a mixture comprising substantially anhydrous C1- 3 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids as a base product. While the process of the invention can be applied to lower aliphatic mono carboxylic acids produced by the liquid or gas phase oxidation of any feedstock comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbons of 4 to 8 carbon atoms, the acids obtained from the liquid phase air oxidation of paraffins such as naphtha are especially suitable. The crude aqueous acid fraction preferably contains from 20% to 50% by weight of water before it is extracted. The mixed acids may also contain butyric acid. The overhead fraction from the distillation stage can be combined with the aqueous residue from the extraction stage and fractionally distilled to recover the ether for recycling. The process is illustrated by reference to a flow sheet (not shown).
