Abstract
Crude maleic anhydride is purified by fractionating it to recover pure maleic anhydride overhead, the product of the initial alkali metal ion content (calculated as p.p.m. by wt. of Na) multiplied by the residence time in hours at distillation temperature in order to recover overhead 95% of the maleic anhydride content being less than 4,000. The crude material may be obtained by oxidizing an appropriate hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, with an excess of air, the major part of the maleic anhydride condensed from the hot gaseous reaction product, the remainder absorbed in water to form maleic acid, which is dehydrated by distilling with an azeotroping agent e.g. xylene, and the maleic anhydride obtained mixed with the condensed maleic anhydride, and distilled as described above.
