Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled essentially colorless compound, readily and in high yield, by distilling crude hydroquinone, bringing the resultant hydroquinone vapor into contact with steam, and condensing the vapor in the presence of the steam to recover the hydroquinone as an aqueous solution thereof.
CONSTITUTION: Hydroquinone vapor distilled from crude hydroquinone is brought into contact with steam, condensed in the presence of steam and recovered as aqueous hydroquinone. The aqueous hydroquinone is then crystallized by cooling, to recover purified hydroquinone. This method is especially advantageous to the purification of the crude hydroquinone prepared via a hydroperoxide. An inert gas, e.g. nitrogen gas, blown into the distillation system is also effective for decoloring the hydroquinone. Steam is fed in an amount of 0.1W10 times that of the crude hydroquinone.
USE: A photographic reagent or anti-oxidizing agent for high polymers.
