Abstract

Normally liquid silicon, tin and titanium chlorides containing coloured metal chlorides are purified by heating a mixture of the liquid chloride and 0.5-2.5 per cent by weight of an organic compound not containing a metal so as to carbonize it and separating the chloride from the carbonization product having the impurities absorbed thereon. Several suitable liquid, solid and gaseous organic compounds are specified, including vegetable and mineral oils, fats, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, amines, acids, &c. The optimum carbonization temperature varies for different groups of compounds from 100 DEG to 500 DEG C. The treatment may be effected under pressure, e.g. at 30 ats. A statement of the art refers to purification: (i) by absorption of the coloured chlorides on active carbon, silica gel, &c., (ii) by convertion of the coloured, volatile chlorides at high temperature by means of hydrogen, into non-volatile chlorides, and (iii) by treatment with sulphur soap, or with metal powder in the presence of alkalis to convert the coloured chlorides into non-volatile compounds from which the liquid chlorides may be distilled. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the purification of normally liquid chlorides of the 4th group of the periodic system. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
