Abstract
A C3-C5 olefinic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture contaminated with more unsaturated compounds and containing higher boiling hydrocarbons is subjected to distillation to obtain the desired hydrocarbon(s) as a gaseous overhead which is partially hydrogenated under the pressure prevailing in the distillation and prior to condensation. Reflux for the distillation may be obtained by partial condensation of the overhead or by using part of the hydrogenated and condensed product or preferably a combination of the two such that the hydrogenation feed contains such an amount of more unsaturated compounds that heating or cooling is unnecessary. Hydrogenation is effected at 30-250 DEG C. and 1-30 atmos. absolute. The purifications of propene in a C3-C5 feed and butadiene in a C4 feed are exemplified.
