Abstract

Dimethyl formamide is freed from impurities such as dimethylamine and ammonia by adding to the impure dimethyl formamide, in the proportion of up to 20 per cent by weight thereof, one or more aromatic hydrocarbons having a lower boiling point than that of dimethyl formamide, and also up to 5 per cent by weight of water, and subjecting the mixture to fractional distillation, under normal or reduced pressure, whereby the impurities distil over together with the added hydrocarbon and water. The dimethyl formamide is then distilled over in vacuo. In an example, benzene (10 parts) and water (4 parts) are added to crude dimethyl formamide (85 parts), and the mixture is fractionated. In the first runnings, the benzene-water mixture passes over with the amine fractions. A pure dimethyl formamide is thereafter distilled over in vacuo. Toluene and xylene can be used instead, or together with, the benzene.
