Abstract
1384948 Purifying aromatic hydrocarbons METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 26 April 1972 [7 May 1971] 19442/72 Heading C5E Pure aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from mixture with non-aromatic hydrocarbons by (a) subjecting the mixture to a preliminary distillation, under reflux, and in the presence of a single anhydrous selective solvent which has a boiling point above the boiling range of the aromatic hydrocarbons, to provide a solventcontaining bottoms fraction having an enriched aromatics content and (b) subjecting this fraction to solvent extraction and/or extractive distillation with a selective solvent having a boiling point above the boiling range of the aromatic hydrocarbons. The solvent used in (a) may be tapped from recirculating solvent used in (b). An example describes the recovery of pure xylene from a crude mixture containing C 7 -C 9 aliphatic and toluene impurities using N-methylpyrrolidone as selective solvent in the preliminary distillation (a) and the extractive distillation (b).
