Abstract

1309875 Separating aromatics from hydrocarbon mixtures HEINRICH KOPPERS GmbH 9 June 1971 [12 Aug 1970] 19752/71 Heading C5E Aromatics are separated from a hydrocarbon mixture 1 by liquid-liquid extraction 2 followed by extractive distillation 7 of the extract phase 6 to produce a bottom product 12, which is subsequently stripped at 13 to provide an aromatics fraction 14 and a solvent fraction, 8, and a top (raffinate) fraction 9 which is recycled to the bottom part of the liquid-liquid extractor; the solvent used in both the liquid-liquid extraction and the extractive distillation comprises morpholine and/or an N-substituted morpholine, for the liquid-liquid extraction the solvent contains 2-15 wt. per cent water and for the extractive distillation the solvent contains 0-8 wt. per cent water. Water streams 19 and 20 separated from the top product 14 of the stripping column 13 and separated from the top product 9 of the extractive distillation column 7 are recycled to the selective solvent used in the liquid-liquid extraction. A water stream 22 can be used to recover solvent from the raffinate 4. Water can be fed into the extractor 2 by lines 28 and 28a separately from the solvent stream 3. Benzene and toluene are recovered from a reformate fraction using N-formyl morpholine as the solvent.
