Abstract

1,227,510. Extractive distillation. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 11 Nov., 1969 [14 Nov., 1968], No. 55224/69. Heading C5E. Pure aromatics are separated from an aromatic/non-aromatic hydrocarbon mixture by extractive distillation with a selective solvent which is recycled after treatment to recover the aromatic hydrocarbon therefrom, a partial stream (e.g. 1%) of the recycled solvent being fed to an intermediate point of a countercurrent extractor, to the top of which is fed water and to the bottom of which is fed the raffinate from the extractive distillation, thus resulting in (1) residual solvent in the raffinate being dissolved in the water and thus recovered, and/or (2) higher boiling hydrocarbons than the desired product, which accumulate in the recycled solvent, being dissolved in the raffinate, preventing their build-up in the system. Examples describe with the aid of a flow-sheet (1) recovery of xylenes from a 135-160‹ C. xylene cut using N-methylpyrrolidine, and (2) recovery of benzene from a 70-82‹ C. benzene cut using dimethylformamide.
