Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from mixtures containing them by solvent extraction with a dialkyl sulphoxide and recovering the aromatics by contacting the extract in countercurrent with a solvent for aromatic hydrocarbons immiscible with dialkyl sulphoxide to obtain a second extract which is distilled to separate aromatics from the second solvent. The first extraction preferably includes the use of a reflux which may be a recycle of the final aromatic concentrate. The second solvent may be a paraffinic hydrocarbon fraction boiling above or below the aromatics. Olefins are removed from the product by treatment with attapulgite or sulphuric acid.
