1,164,372. Separating aromatic hydrocarbons. SOC. ITALIANA RESINE S.p.A. 16 Jan., 1967 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 2277/67. Heading C5E. A process for separating pure aromatic hydrocarbons from a liquid hydrocarbon mixture comprises: (a) charging the mixture to a multistage extractor at elevated temperature with a high boiling selective solvent for the aromatic hydrocarbons; (b) collecting a liquid extract phase of high aromatic content and a liquid raffinate phase comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbons and a small amount of aromatic hydrocarbons; (c) cooling the extract phase, conveying it to a decanter and allowing two liquid phases to separate; (d) recycling the heavier, solvent-containing phase to the extractor; (e) conveying the lighter, aromatic hydrocarbons-containing phase to an azeotropic distillation column; (f) azeotropically distilling the lighter phase with acetone to obtain an overhead fraction of acetone and non-aromatics and a bottoms fraction of high aromatic content; (g) treating both the raffinate phase from (b) and the overhead fraction from (f) with water to obtain an aqueous acetone phase and a second phase comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbons and a small amount of aromatics; (h) recovering acetone from the aqueous-acetone phase; (i) distilling from the second phase of (g) a light non-aromatic fraction together with at least a part of the small amount of aromatics and recycling the distilled fraction to the extractor; and (j) recovering the aromatic hydrocarbons from the bottoms fraction of (f) by distillation. The feedstock may be a hydrogenated reforming petrol or a fraction thereof. The solvent may be diethylene glycol, and/or dipropylene glycol; or sulpholane and preferably contains 1-15% by wt. water. The extraction may be carried out at 80-130 C. and superatmospheric pressure. The extracted phase may be cooled by at least 30 C. to effect separation of the two liquid phases.
