1,154,603. Separating hydrocarbons. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 20 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 46970/66. Heading C5E. A process for the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons from a hydrocarbon supply also containing non-aromatic hydrocarbons by passing said supply through a vertically elongated extraction zone in counter-current contact with a lean solvent introduced at a point near the top of said extraction zone, removing resulting raffinate phase consisting of essentially non- aromatics from the top of the said extraction zone, removing resulting extract phase consisting of essentially solvent enriched in aromatics and a smaller amount of non-aromatic hydrocarbons from the bottom of said extraction zone, passing said extract phase to an extractive distillation zone and therein stripping non-aromatic hydrocarbons from said extract phase, is characterized in that said hydrocarbon supply comprises at least two feed streams, the non-aromatic components of the first one of said feed streams having a greater volatility in the said extractive distillation zone than the non-aromatic components of the other feed streams, and said first feed stream is introduced into said extraction zone at a lower point than said other feed streams. The solvent may be diethylene glycol, a polyethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, a polypropylene glycol, dimethyl sulphoxide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, sulpholane or sulpholene. It may contain up to 20% of water.
