Abstract

1,154,602. Separating hydrocarbons. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 17 Oct., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 46257/66. Heading C5E. A process for the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons from a feed also containing non- aromatic hydrocarbons by contacting said feed with a selective solvent in an extraction zone and separating the resulting extract, containing aromatic hydrocarbons, from raffinate containing non-aromatic hydrocarbons, wherein said feed, due to a high concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons therein, tends to form a single phase with said solvent, is characterized by recycling and combining with said feed, a porportion of said raffinate, as untreated raffinate, which renders said feed immiscible with said solvent, and subjecting the resultant mixture of feed and raffinate to contact with solvent in the extraction zone. A suitable solvent comprises a substituted or unsubstituted sulpholane which may contain up to 20% of water. By untreated raffinate is meant raffinate not physically or chemically treated; the part recycled has thus properties identical with the whole raffinate.
