Abstract

1,233,398. Solvent extraction. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 11 March, 1969, No. 12624/69. Heading C5E. A process for the solvent extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from a mixed hydrocarbon feed stock comprises passing said feed stock to an extraction zone, passing a lean solvent composition comprising at least one solvent selected from the sulpholane-type chemicals and the sulpholene-type chemicals to said extraction zone, therein contacting a continuous liquid phase of said feed stock with a dispersed liquid phase of said solvent composition thereby extracting aromatic hydrocarbons from said feed stock into said solvent, withdrawing from said extraction zone a raffinate stream comprising non-aromatic hydrocarbons, and a rich solvent stream containing resulting extracted aromatic hydrocarbons, separating said rich solvent stream to provide a lean solvent recycle stream and an aromatic hydrocarbon product stream, recycling at least a portion of said lean solvent recycle stream to said extraction zone as a portion of said lean solvent stream, and recovering the resulting aromatic hydrocarbon product stream. Solvents mentioned include sulpholane, 2-methyl sulpholane, 2,4-dimethyl sulpholane, 2-sulpholene and 3-sulpholene. The description includes comparative examples in which the solvent forms the continuous phase. The feed stock may be a catalytic reformate.
