Abstract

The separation of aromatic hydrocarbons is effected by countercurrent extraction with formylmorpholine at 20-90 DEG C., introducing a reflux of non-aromatic hydrocarbons boiling below the feed, contacting the extract with further lower boiling non-aromatics to obtain solvent and a solvent free hydrocarbon extract, evaporating off a major portion of the non-aromatics which are recycled for use as reflux and washing agent, evaporating the remaining non-aromatics with some low-boiling aromatics which are recycled to the extraction with the feed and recovering substantially pure aromatics as bottoms. The solvent may contain 0.5-10% vol. of water and is used in a volume ratio to feed of 1-5:1. The ratio of reflux to feed may be 0.15-0.7:1 and of washing agent to solvent 0.5-1.2:1. Pentane or butane may be used in recovering benzene, toluene and xylene.
