Abstract

1,138,004. Extractive distillation. HEINRICH KOPPERS G.m.b.H. 28 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14112/67. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from non-aromatic hydrocarbons by an extractive distillation process characterized by the following features:- (a) The extraction agent, e.g. propylene carbonate, contains as additives compounds similar to, but not the same as, those being extracted (e.g. if the extraction is to produce benzene, toluene and xylene, then the additives may be C 9 aromatics); (b) At least two extractive - distillation columns, shown as 2 and 7 in the figure, are installed one behind the other in series, the downstream column 7 being operated at a lower pressure than the upstream column 2; and (c) The extract is treated in a number of stripping columns in series, each corresponding to a desired product (shown as columns 11, 18 and 24 corresponding to benzene, toluene and xylene), a product containing non-aromatics being drawn off from the tray above the feeding tray of each such stripping column (shown at 13, 20 and 26). The fractions drawn off at 13, 20 and 26 are treated in auxiliary strippers 14, 21 and 27 to remove any aromatics present, and are then combined in line 16 and subjected either to further extractive distillation in column 29 or to common distillation (not shown). The overheads from columns 2, 7 and 29 are combined as non-aromatic product, and the residue from column 29 is combined with that from column 7 and recycled to the stripping columns. The additive to the extraction agent may be already present, e.g. in recycled extraction agent, or may be added thereto, and part of the additive may be added directly to the extractive-distillations columns above the feed-point of the extraction agent, i.e. at 34 and 35 to columns 2 and 7 respectively. Benzene, toluene and xylene of high purity are recovered at 12, 19 and 25.
