Abstract

1,139,630. Extractive distillation. HEINRICH KOPPERS G.m.b.H. 15 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 56974/67. Heading C5E. Aromatic compounds may be separated from hydrocarbon mixtures containing them and non-aromatic components by extractive distillation using one or more N-substituted morpholines with substituents containing not more than 7 carbon atoms as the selective solvent. If the hydrocarbon feedstock contains unsaturated and/or heterogeneous compounds such as cyclopentadiene andthiophene, the extract may be further purified by washing in H 2 SO 4 or treatment with fuller's earth. The extractive distillation may be performed without an external hydrocarbon reflux i.e. no condensate being added to the raffinate phase of the column. The selective solvent may be recovered by distillation, or if it contains unsaturated impurities, by sedimentation phase hydrogenation, e.g. with a nickel catalyst. Examples describe the separation of benzene, toluene and xylenes from various feedstocks using N-formyl-morpholine, N-oxyethyl morpholine, 50/50 N-acetyl morpholine/N-formylmorpholine, and N-phenyl-morpholine as selective solvents.
