Abstract

A method of recovering pure aromatics from a hydrocarbon mixture comprises subjecting the mixture to extractive distillation and subjecting the resultant overhead product to multistage liquid-liquid extraction in countercurrent with a selective solvent, the overhead product of the extractive distillation being introduced into the liquid-liquid extraction at a point that precedes the extract withdrawal plate by at least 5 ideal contact stages, and an overhead product from the extract phase containing all the non-aromatics therein as well as 20 to 60% of aromatics being obtained by rectification, condensed and reintroduced into the liquid-liquid extraction as extract reflux. The preferred solvent for both extraction stages is aqueous N-methyl pyrrolidone, or a mixture thereof with ethylene glycol.
