Abstract

1378385 Butadiene IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 50355/71 Heading C5E Butadiene is obtained by a process comprising (a) distilling a hydrocarbon stream to produce a C 4 -fraction containing C 3 and/or C 5 impurities; (b) extracting the C 4 -fraction with a selective solvent to produce an extract containing butadiene and at least part of C 3 and/or C 5 hydrocarbons; (c) distilling the extract to produce substantially pure butadiene and a mixture of butadiene with the C 3 and/or C 5 impurities; and (d) recycling the mixture of butadiene and C 3 and/or C 5 hydrocarbons to distillation stage (a). The first stage may comprise two stills, the first to remove most of the C 3 hydrocarbons and the second to remove most of the C 5 and C 5+ hydrocarbons. The solvent in (b) may be acetonitrile, DMF, dimethylacetamide, furfural or, preferably, NMP. A methyl-acetylene-butadiene mixture is obtained as overhead from (c) and may be partly recycled to (c) and partly recycled to (a).
