Abstract
Mono- and di-methylamine are recovered from aqueous mixtures containing them by fractionally distilling the mixtures to separate the amines from the water, the mixed amines being then separated from one another by further fractional distillation. The process may be applied to aqueous mixtures containing ammonia and trimethylamine as well as monoand di-methylamine, such as the mixtures obtained by the catalytic reaction of methanol or dimethyl ether with ammonia; in this case the three amines and ammonia are first distilled off from the water, and the amines are then separated from one another by further fractionation. Distillation may be effected under pressure. An example illustrating suitable distillation conditions is given.
