Abstract
Impure ethyl alcohol, obtained by the hydration of ethylene, and having a permanganate time of at least ten minutes, is purified by a method comprising treating the impure alcohol in liquid phase with hydrogen in the presence of a reduced nickel or platinum catalyst. The treatment with hydrogen is preferably carried out for less than 24 minutes. The impure alcohol may be previously concentrated by distillation, preferably by an extractive distillation with water. In an example crude ethanol from ethylene hydration is purified by water extractive distillation to give a dilute aqueous solution which is distilled to give comparatively pure ethanol. This is mixed with hydrogen in the presence of a reduced nickel or platinum catalyst at a temperature in the range 50-160 DEG F. at a pressure in the range 0-50 lb./sq. in. gauge. The excess hydrogen is separated and may be recycled and the purified ethanol is collected.
