Abstract
In the production of hydrogen peroxide according to the parent Specification, the crude reaction product is fed to a fractionating column, having a temperature at the top of at least 55 DEG C. and at the bottom of not greater than 120 DEG C., and a pressure at the top of 400-700 mm of mercury, after adjusting, if necessary, the water content to 20-60 per cent. and the temperature to a value close to that at the point of introduction into the column, and is rectified during a residence time of not greater than 100 minutes, alcohol and ketone being distilled off as a top fraction and an aqueous solution containing 5-35 per cent. hydrogen peroxide being obtained as a bottom fraction. Fractionation in this way converts organic peroxides to hydrogen peroxide. Preliminary conversion may be effected in a separate step, e.g. by heating in a tank at 75-120 DEG C. for up to an hour. The feed may be pretreated to remove traces of metallic impurities, e.g. by flash evaporation optionally followed by complete or partial condensation before introduction into the fractionating column. Part of the top fraction may be recycled as external reflux to the column in a reflux ratio of 0.2-4. The top fraction may be recycled to the hydrogen peroxide production step after hydrogenation. Crude products containing 10-40 per cent, of the total active oxygen in the form of organic peroxides treated at pressures of 550-675 m.m. of mercury and residence times of 10-30 minutes yield up to 97-99 per cent. of the total active oxygen as hydrogen peroxide.
