Abstract

In a process for recovering ammonia from a gas such as coke-oven gas the gas is scrubbed with an aqueous solution containing ammonia and phosphoric acid and the ammonia is stripped from the ammonia-enriched solution withdrawn from the scrubber by steam stripping in a column under a pressure of between 100 and 300 p.s.c.a. The effluent solution from the stripping column may be flash-evaporated at sub-atmospheric pressure, cooled and returned to the scrubber.ALSO:In a process for recovering ammonia from a gas such as coke-oven gas, the gas is scrubbed with an aqueous solution containing ammonia and phosphoric acid and the ammonia is stripped from the ammonia-enriched solution withdrawn from the scrubber by steam stripping in a stripping column under a pressure between 100 and 300 p.s.i.a. The effluent solution from the stripping column may be flash-evaporated under sub-atmosphere pressure, cooled and returned to the scrubber. The overhead condensate may be fractionated under pressure to produce anhydrous ammonia and oils in the condensate may be removed by fractionation or passage through an active carbon filter. Ammonia from a still distilling ammoniacal liquor may be added to the ammonia-enriched solution as it leaves the scrubber to be stripped in the stripping column.
