975,324. Concentrating nitric acid. AMERICAN METAL CLIMAX Inc. Dec. 21, 1960 [Dec. 24, 1959], No. 43898/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading C1A. A method of concentrating nitric acid in a nitric acid-water solution comprises dissolving potassium nitrate in the solution and removing vapours therefrom until strong nitric acid remains. The effect of the KNO 3 is that the water vapours produced from the solution contain less nitric acid vapour than azeotropic vapours formed from nitric acid in water alone, so that the nitric acid solution remaining has a concentration greater than azeotropic. The vapours may be removed by fractionation in a column containing a series of trays. Weak solution is introduced at a point below the trays and is fractionally distilled so that water vapours are removed overhead and strong nitric acid solution of KNO 3 recovered below the trays. The solution recovered may be further distilled to give vapours which on fractional distillation yield 85-100% nitric acid overhead. The invention is illustrated in detail as part of the process for producing chlorine from the reaction of nitric acid with a chloride of potassium, sodium, hydrogen, or a mixture thereof which is the subject of Specification 975,325.
