Abstract
Peracetic acid is produced in a continuous process by causing a mixture comprising acetaldehyde, an inert diluent, a salt of a metal having an atomic number from 25 to 29 inclusive, and oxygen, or an inert gas admixed with oxygen, at a total pressure of 10 to 100 ats. gauge to completely fill, and flow in turbulent conditions through, a reaction zone maintained at 20 DEG to 60 DEG C. and recovering a product comprising peracetic acid. The peracetic acid may be recovered from the reaction product by separating the gaseous and liquid components of the mixture leaving the reaction zone, introducing the liquid component to a distillation zone to evaporate at least some unreacted acetaldehyde and inert diluent, withdrawing liquid from the lower region of said distillation zone and introducing the withdrawn liquid into a thin film evaporator, returning acetaldehyde evaporated therein to the lower region of the distillation zone and recovering a liquid product comprising peracetic acid from the evaporator. A solvent for the metal salt having a boiling-point above 180 DEG C. may be added to the reaction mixture prior to introduction into the thin film evaporator. Alternatively, the solvent for the metal salt can be added to the liquid component of the reaction mixture leaving the reaction zone, the liquid component then introduced into a distillation zone to evaporate unreacted acetaldehyde, the remainder of the liquid component introduced into a thin-film evaporator and a product comprising peracetic acid withdrawn as vapour.
