Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide is produced by interacting a liquid secondary alcohol containing 3-12 carbon atoms in the molecule and oxygen at a temperature of about 70-160 DEG C. in a plurality of reaction zones, e.g. 2-5, through which the alcohol is successively passed. A substantially constant concentration of hydrogen peroxide is preferably maintained in each zone. The temperature is preferably decreased progressively from zone to zone in the direction of liquid flow. In a three zone process the temperatures in the respective zones may be 140-160 DEG C., 130-140 DEG C. and 120-130 DEG C. The same amount of hydrogen peroxide is preferably produced in each stage. The secondary alcohol is preferably an aliphatic alcohol containing 3-8 carbon atoms, e.g. isopropyl alcohol. The alcohol may be employed as an azeotropic mixture with water. The oxygen may be in the form of air, oxygen-enriched air, substantially pure oxygen, or mixtures of oxygen and helium, carbon monoxide or methane. The reaction may be carried out under pressure, e.g. 35 atmos. The reactors may be constructed of, or lined with, glass, porcelain, aluminium, tin, stainless steel or a resin. A hydrogen peroxide stabilizer, e.g. potassium pyrophosphate may be employed. The reaction may be initiated by the addition of an organic or inorganic peroxide including hydrogen peroxide itself. The hydrogen peroxide may be recovered from the crude product by distillation or by precipitation as calcium peroxide followed by treatment with acid.
