Abstract

<PICT:0915874/III/1> Reaction gases produced in a catalysis chamber enter deposition apparatus 21, where the reaction product from a previous production has been precipitated, fusing the product by indirect-heat-exchange without any deposit of fresh product. The gases then pass to heat-exchanger 19 and then into a second deposition chamber which cools below the dew point, with consequent deposition of crude reaction product. By valve arrangements the order of the deposition chambers can be changed. The melted product is subseuently subjected to purifying distillation.ALSO:Phthalic anhydride produced by the catalytic oxidation of naphthalene as a hot vapour is first heat-exchanged with crude condensed anhydride from a previous reaction; then passed through a heat-exchanger to bring the temperature nearer the dew point and is finally cooled to give a crude reaction product for melting. The melted product is purified by distillation.
