Abstract

A process for the purification of terephthalic acid comprises dissolving the crude or impure terephthalic acid in an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, e.g. acetic acid, at a temperature of 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. and under a pressure sufficient to maintain the solvent in a liquid phase, contacting the solution with a gaseous molecular oxygen or molecular oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, in the presence of at least one oxidation catalyst containing cobalt, manganese, chromium, cerium and lead or their compounds, then cooling the resulting solution to crystallize out pure terephthalic acid and thereafter separating it from the solution. Several examples are given.
