Abstract
1,155,589. Terephthalic acid purification. CHEMISCHE WERKE WITTEN G.m.b.H. 27 July, 1966 [28 July, 1965 (2)], No. 33736/66. Heading C2C. In a process for the purification and recovery of free terephthalic acid produced in the oxidation of a mixture of p-xylene and a lower alkyl (C 1 -C 4 ) ester of p-toluic acid with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst at an elevated temperature, the oxidized reaction mixture comprising ptoluic acid, a mono lower alkyl ester of terephthalic acid and free terephthalic acid is subjected to a thermal after-treatment in the liquid phase after the oxidation is terminated and free terephthalic acid is recovered. Recovery of terephthalic acid is facilitated by the presence of p-xylene, water and or a lower carboxylic acid in the reaction mixture. Examples are furnished.
