Abstract
1348091 Trimellitic acid and anhydride INSTYTUT CHEMII PRZEMYSLOWEJ 13 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971] 1568/72 Heading C2C Trimellitic anhydride is prepared by thermal dehydration of trimellitic acid in an organic liquid medium (e.g. benzene or pseudocumene) under an inert gas, the trimellitic acid having been prepared by oxidizing pseudocumene with O 2 in acetic acid medium in the presence of a heavy metal salt catalyst and in the presence of an oxidation initiator comprising incompletely oxidized pseudocumene. The oxidation reaction product is preferably distilled to remove water and at least some acetic acid, a solvent (e.g. benzene or pseudocumene) added to the distillation residue and trimellitic acid crystallized therefrom. The filtrate containing incompletely oxidized pseudocumene may be recycled to the oxidation reactor.
