Abstract

1453507 Phthalic anhydride BASF AG 15 March 1974 [17 March 1973] 11581/74 Heading C2C A process for the continuous recovery of phthalic anhydride from process gas obtained in the catalytic atmospheric oxidation of o-xylene or naphthalene comprises treating the process gas with a hydrocarbon solvent comprising one or more paraffins of 26 to 44 carbon atoms and boiling at above 360‹ C. at standard pressure at a temperature of not less than 60‹ C., cooling the hydrocarbon solvent laden with phthalic anhydride to less than 135‹ C., separating the solid phthalic anhydride from the hydrocarbon solvent in the form of a slurry, recycling the separated solvent to the process gas treatment, and distilling the phthalic anhydride from the slurry after melting. The hydrocarbon solvent may also contain up to 10% by weight of one or more aromatic compounds.
