Abstract
1,200,571. Phthalic acid. STANDARD OIL CO. 25 March, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 15614/69. Heading C2C. A process for the continuous oxidation of o-xylene to phthalic acid in the liquid phase comprises charging o-xylene, a heavy metal catalyst e.g. Co and/or Mn and a source of bromine and acetic acid as solvent to a reaction zone, passing in a molecular oxygen-containing gas while maintaining a temperature in the range of 300‹ to 475‹ F. and a catalyst concentration based on the solvent in the range 0À01 to 1À0 per cent by weight for the heavy metal and for the bromine, maintaining an elevated pressure sufficient to maintain the reaction mixture substantially in the liquid phase while venting continuously from said reaction zone a vapour stream containing acetic acid and water vapour, passing said vapour stream to a separation zone and recovering therefrom a dehydrated acetic acid stream containing less then 3% by weight of water and recycling said stream to the reaction zone; continuously with drawing from the reaction zone a product stream and separating and recovering phthalic acid therefrom while recovering dehydrated acetic acid containing less than 3% by weight of water therefrom and recycling to said reaction zone.
