Abstract
1493644 Production of aromatic polycarboxylic acids MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 June 1975 [4 June 1974] 23818/75 Heading C2C Aromatic polycarboxylic acids are obtained by oxidizing an aromatic compound having at least two aliphatic substituents which can be oxidized to -COOH groups, in at least one aliphatic monocarboxylic acid solvent having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the presence of at least one heavy metal catalyst by bubbling a gas containing molecular oxygen through a gas inlet into the reaction mixture liquid whilst maintaining the temperature of the gas at the gas inlet at a temperature of 10‹ C. below the reaction or higher. Examples 1-3 describe the preparation of terephthalic acid from p-xylene using cobalt acetate, manganese acetate and sodium bromide as catalyst. The temperatures of the reaction mixtures and at the gas inlets were 210‹ and 218‹ C. in Examples I and III and 210‹ and 205‹ C. in Example II.
