Abstract

1435675 Fatty acid recovery AJINOMOTO CO Inc 23 May 1974 [31 May 1973] 23203/74 Heading C2C Fatty acids are recovered as their methyl esters from the product mixture of fatty acids and unreacted paraffins obtained by catalytic oxidation of paraffins with gaseous oxygen, by reacting the mixture with methanol and fractionally distilling the higher boiling methyl esters. The oxidation may be of paraffins of 10 to 35 carbon atoms in the presence of a manganese catalyst to give a product containing 20-50% fatty acids and unsaponifiable unreacted paraffin 80-50%. The reaction with methanol may be at 70-150‹ C. in the presence of an acid or cation exchange resin, and the methyl esters recovered may be converted to free acids and the higher boiling fraction may be separated to paraffins and esters by conventional saponification. Examples describe the treatment of products cf the oxidation of n-tetradecane, n-docosane, C 14 -C 21 , and C 13 -C 16 paraffinic straight chain mixtures and the recovery of methyl esters therefrom.
