Abstract
Nitric acid in aqueous solution may be concentrated by dissolving in said solution a nitrate of a Group IA metal having an atomic weight heavier than potassium and thereafter removing vapours from said solution. The added nitrates act by shifting the azeotropic point upwardly from 68% for HNO3, water evaporating more readily. The process may be operated in conjunction with salts which depress the azeotropic point. Thus vapours evaporated from an evaporator and containing more than 68% HNO3 may be contacted in a dehydrator with downwardly flowing Mg(NO3)2, water being extracted from the vapours and a stream even stronger in HNO3 passing overhead.
