Abstract
Thorium salts are extracted from aqueous solutions containing thorium, rare earth, nitrate and phosphate ions by means of an organic water-immiscible solvent, the extraction being carried out in the presence of ferric or aluminium ions. The organic solvent may be a trialkyl phosphate, preferably tri-butylphosphate, and may be mixed with a xylene. The aqueous solution is preferably free from sulphate and chloride ions and may be prepared by dissolving a suitable concentrate in excess nitric acid, such that the concentration of free nitric acid in the solution is from 2 to 8 molar. The ferric or aluminium ions are preferably added in the forms of their nitrates. The amounts of the ions present are preferably, per gram of phosphate ion in the solution, at least 0.89 grams of ferric ion or 0.5 grams of aluminium ion.
