Abstract
Samarium and/or europium and/or ytterbium are separated in the presence of other rare earths in a process which comprises treating, in a non oxidizing atmosphere, an aqueous solution containing a divalent salt, for example the chloride, of at least one of the above three rare earths with ammonia, in the presence of sulphate ions, which may be added as ammonium sulphate, to form an alkaline suspension, the trivalent rare earths being precipitated as hydroxides and the divalent rare earths as sulphates, acidifying the suspension, for example with hydrochloric acid, to dissolve the trivalent rare earths, and then separating the divalent rare earth hydroxides precipitate from the solution. The divalent salts may be prepared by reducing the trivalent salts by electrolysis or with sodium vapour. If it is desired to recover europium by itself, the reduction may be effected with zinc amalgam, which reduces the europium only.
