Abstract

1343626 Zinc chlorides and sulphate; hydrochloric acid NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR METALLURGY and WOODALL-DUCKHAM SOUTH AFRICA (PTY) Ltd 16 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 58521/71 Heading C1A ZnCl 2 is removed from solus containing zinc. and iron chlorides by contacting with an anion exchange medium and then recovering chloride values from the resulting solution by high temperature hydrolysis to iron oxide and HCl. The ZnCl 2 after elution with water may be converted to ZnSO 4 by absorption on a cation exchange medium and subsequent stripping with H 2 SO 4 . The ZnSO 4 produced may be crystallized out by addition of concentrated H 2 SO 4 or alternatively the solution may be subjected to electrowinning to recover metallic zinc. The process is suitable for the recovery of HCl from pickle liquors and leach liquors.
