Abstract

1404586 Zinc sulphate removal ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 23 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 49048/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A sulphuric acid pickel or leach liquor contaminated with the ions of a metal or metals more noble than zinc is treated to recover acid values by (i) neutralization with zinc metal or zinc oxide (ii) treatment with zinc metal to precipitate in metallic form, the contaminating ions, (iii) filtration to remove the precipitate and (iv) electrolysis of the resulting solution whereby metallic zinc is recovered and sulphuric acid is regenerated. The zinc recovered in the final step may be recirculated for use in steps (i) and/or (ii). If the liquor is contaminated with quantities of iron, an additional neutralization step may be effected between steps (i) and (ii) whereby the iron is precipitated as the oxide or hydroxide by treatment with oxygen, preferably at an elevated temperature.
