Abstract

1347715 Metal value extraction DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 26 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 17242/71 Heading C1A Copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel are extracted from ocean floor nodules by chlorinating or hydrochlorinating the nodules, treating the reaction products to provide the metals in aqueous solution, treating the aqueous solution with a liquid ion exchange reagent to extract copper, nickel and/or cobalt into an organic solution and stripping the desired metal from the liquid ion exchange reagent into an aqueous solution. Nodules, which may be first ground, may then be reacted with hydrogen chloride or chlorine and coal so as to produce chlorides of manganese, copper, cobalt, iron and other metals in minor quantities. These products may at some stage be reacted with air, water or water vapour to convert the iron chloride into iron oxide. In one embodiment water vapour is flowed against the reaction products and the reaction mass is then leached, the insoluble iron oxide being filtered off. In another embodiment, the reaction products are leached with water, and caustic alkali (possibly air also) is then injected into the resulting leach liquor to convert iron chloride to iron oxide. Leaching may also be with sodium sulphate solution. The Specification describes how the hydrochlorinated and chlorinated products may be obtained in fractions. In Example 1 the leach liquor is stripped sequentially of copper, nickel and cobalt by use of solutions (e.g. kerosene) 8- hydroxyquinoline or an α-hydroxy oxime liquid ion exchange reagent. When the cobalt is extracted triisooctylamine solution is used as well. The isolation of manganese chloride from the resulting manganese raffinate solution may be carried out by sulphide precipitation to remove any impurities, evaporation and crystallization. Manganese metal can be isolated from its chloride by use of a fused cell or an aluminium reduction cell.
