Abstract

Liquors containing manganous salts are brought to a pH of 8.0-8.5, filtered and subsequently pure manganous hydroxide precipitated therefrom by adding a basic oxide or hydroxide whereby the pH is raised to not greater than 9, the precipitation being performed in the presence of an ammonium compound. The oxide or hydroxide must be capable of giving a pH value of at least 10 when added to water and must not form an insoluble salt with any acid radical present in the liquor. Specified precipitants for the manganous hydroxide are oxides and hydroxides of alkali metals (e.g. sodium) or alkaline earth metals (e.g. calcium), magnesium, ammonium and organic bases: with chloridecontaining liquors, any of these may be used; with sulphate-containing liquors alkaline earth hydroxides cannot be used. The ammonium salt content need not be equivalent to more than 1 per cent of ammonia in the liquor and is preferably added after the first filtration. As starting liquors there may e.g. be employed the product of oxidation of aniline with manganese dioxide ore and sulphuric acid, after separation of benzoquinone, or a liquor obtained from the oxidation of ferrous chloride with manganic oxide. In one embodiment a liquor containing one or more ammonium compounds, e.g. a sulphate is first neutralized at a pH of 4 with lime to remove excess acid and precipitate iron and calcium sulphate; the mixture is preferably filtered and is then further treated according to the invention. The liquor from which the bulk of the manganese has been precipitated may be treated with a water-soluble carbonate and the precipitated manganese carbonate returned to a fresh batch of the original liquor for treatment in accordance with the invention.
